The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
