The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
