England and Wales Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
